Sahih al-Bukhari 4636 records Muhammad as saying that the Hour will not be established until the sun rises from the West. When people see it they will all believe, but faith at that moment will no longer benefit anyone. The statement is linked to Quran 6:158.
Modern apologists sometimes connect this prediction to the scientific phenomenon of geomagnetic pole reversal. They suggest that a reversal of the Earth’s magnetic poles could cause the sun to appear to rise in the West. This interpretation does not hold.
Geographical Poles versus Magnetic Poles
The geographical North and South Poles are the points where the Earth’s axis of rotation meets the surface. These poles define the direction of the planet’s spin and therefore the apparent path of the sun across the sky. Sunrise in the East and sunset in the West are consequences of this rotation.
The magnetic poles are the locations where the Earth’s magnetic field lines are vertical. They are generated by the motion of molten iron in the outer core and can wander or reverse over geological time. A magnetic reversal switches the positions of magnetic north and magnetic south; it does not alter the planet’s rotational axis or the geographical poles.
What a Magnetic Reversal Actually Does
During a reversal the magnetic field weakens for a period that may last thousands of years. This temporary weakening can allow more cosmic and solar radiation to reach the upper atmosphere, potentially affecting satellites, power grids, and high-altitude flights. Life on Earth has survived many such reversals in the past without evidence of global catastrophe or the rearrangement of continents.
Because the geographical poles remain fixed, the sun continues to rise in the East and set in the West for every location on the planet. Japan, India, the Arabian Peninsula, and Europe will still experience sunrise in the same sequence. The sun will not begin rising over Europe first and then move eastward toward Japan.
Catastrophic Imagery in Islamic Eschatology
Quranic descriptions of the Last Hour include mountains flying like carded wool (Surah al-Qari‘ah 101:1–5). A geomagnetic reversal produces no such physical upheaval. The two phenomena are unrelated.
Conclusion
The hadith predicts a reversal of the sun’s rising direction as a final, unmistakable sign. Geomagnetic pole reversal, the only scientific process sometimes invoked to explain the prediction, changes neither the geographical poles nor the observed path of the sun. The prophecy therefore remains without a corresponding physical mechanism and stands unfulfilled.
