Some modern Muslim apologists assert that Quran 21:30 anticipates the Big Bang theory. The verse is often translated along these lines:

“Do the disbelievers not realize that the heavens and the earth were once one mass, which We then split apart?”

The Arabic terms at the center of the claim are ratqan (رَتْقًا) and fafataqnāhumā (فَفَتَقْنَاهُمَا). A careful reading of the language, the broader Quranic cosmology, the scientific timeline, and the historical context shows that the verse does not describe the Big Bang.

1. “Ratqan” Does Not Mean a Single Homogeneous Mass

Lane’s Lexicon defines ratq as something closed up, sewn together, or joined. The verse indicates that the heavens and the earth were adjacent or joined at the beginning and were later separated. It does not state that they formed one undifferentiated mass of energy and matter that then exploded.

Classical commentators such as Ibn Kathir explain the verse as the heavens and earth being connected, touching, or piled upon one another at the start, after which they were separated into seven heavens and seven earths with air between the lowest heaven and the earth. This is a picture of two already distinct realms being parted, not of a singular primordial entity splitting into the present universe.

A hadith in Sahih Bukhari (3191) further supports sequential, separate creation: Allah first created the Throne above the water, then wrote everything in the Book, and then created the heavens and the earth. There is no mention of a single homogeneous mass from which both later emerged.

2. The Grammar of Separation Rules Out an Explosion

The verb form fafataqnāhumā uses a dual object pronoun (“We separated them”). This indicates two entities that existed as distinct before the separation and remained two afterward. The root fataq means to split, unstitch, or separate; it carries no connotation of a violent explosion or rapid expansion of space-time.

The Quran nowhere describes a chaotic, high-energy event. The separation is presented as an orderly divine act.

3. Quranic Cosmology Contradicts Big Bang Cosmology

In the Quranic account (especially 41:9–12), the seven heavens are formed, and only the lowest heaven is later adorned with stars “as lamps.” The stars are added after the heavens already exist and are confined to the nearest layer. The other six heavens contain no stars. This structured, hierarchical design is the opposite of a Big Bang origin in which stars and galaxies emerge from the same expanding continuum of matter and energy.

4. The Scientific Timeline Does Not Match

The Big Bang is dated to approximately 13.8 billion years ago. Earth formed roughly 4.5 billion years ago—about 9 billion years later—from the debris of earlier generations of stars. The heavens (in the modern sense of the universe) and the Earth were never simultaneous “joined” entities that were later parted. The Quranic picture of simultaneous or near-simultaneous creation followed by separation is incompatible with this chronology.

5. The Motif Is Ancient and Widespread

The idea that sky and earth were once united and later separated appears in many pre-Islamic traditions:

  • Mesopotamian myths describe the heavens and earth as originally joined.
  • Egyptian mythology shows the sky goddess Nut and the earth god Geb locked together until the air god Shu forced them apart.
  • Greek sources speak of Uranus and Gaia as initially united.
  • Similar separation motifs occur in Hindu, Norse, Maori, Chinese, Japanese, and various African and Native American traditions.

The Quranic verse echoes a common ancient Near Eastern and worldwide cosmological theme rather than revealing twentieth-century physics.
