Modern Muslim apologists, including figures such as Zakir Naik and Harun Yahya, claim that Quran 51:47 describes the continuous expansion of the universe—a scientific fact established only in the 20th century. They present this as evidence of divine foreknowledge.
The verse in Arabic reads:
وَالسَّمَاءَ بَنَيْنَاهَا بِأَيْدٍ وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ
Popular modern translations render the final clause as “We are steadily expanding it,” “We will continue to expand it,” or similar continuous-action phrasing. These renderings are linguistically inaccurate.
Grammatical Analysis
The key phrase is wa-innā la-mūsiʿūn.
- Wa-innā = “and indeed We”
- La-mūsiʿūn = nominative masculine plural active participle (Form IV) meaning “are expanders” or “are the ones who make wide/ample.”
It is a noun describing the subject (God), not a verb describing an ongoing action performed upon the heaven. The correct literal sense is: “And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed We are [its] expander.”

Modern translators render it as a statement about God’s past action and quality (“how excellent a spreader We are”), not as “We are still steadily spreading the earth.” Consistency requires the same treatment of la-mūsiʿūn in 51:47. Selective continuous-tense translation of only the first verse reveals special pleading.
Quranic Cosmology Versus Modern Cosmology
The scientific expansion of the universe refers to the metric expansion of space itself, with galaxies receding from one another. The Quran, however, speaks of al-samāʾ (the sky/heaven) and repeatedly describes seven solid skies or layered firmaments in which prophets and communities reside. A solid dome or layered structure cannot expand in the manner of cosmic space. Equating samāʾ with the modern concept of the universe is a retrospective redefinition.

For fourteen centuries, Muslim scholars, commentators, and the vast body of hadith literature never extracted continuous universal expansion from 51:47. The interpretation appeared only after Hubble’s observations and the acceptance of an expanding universe in modern cosmology. This pattern—discovering “scientific miracles” only after the science is already known—is characteristic of post-hoc apologetics rather than genuine prediction.
